Total mixed ration (TMR) is a method of feeding ruminants.

The purpose of feeding a TMR diet is that each animal can consume the required level of nutrients in each bite.

A ruminant's ration should include fiber, a balance of grains and proteins, vitamins and minerals.

By using a TMR diet, you are able to manage daily requirements to provide healthy ruminants, increases in milk production and reproduction.

The key to formulating TMR is maximized dry matter intake and prevent dehydration by adding 30-40% water to the mix before feeding.

    Advantages compared to regular feeds:

Feed is more uniform and therefore there is no selection of ingredients by the animal

Due to the added water there is no swelling of ingredients in the gut. Due to the water it reduces the speed of intake

    Swelling improves uniformity rumen

    Nutritional absorption levels are higher

Less competition during feeding which is less stressful for the animals

    Added water prevents dehydration
